The Bowes Museum is a magnificent French Chateau situated in parklands and gardens in the picturesque market town of Barnard Castle in the Durham Dales.
Known as the North’s Museum of Art, the Bowes Museum houses internationally significant collections of fine and decorative arts, as well as collections devoted to fashion, textile and design.
It was built by John and Josephine Bowes and opened to the public as a Museum in 1892.
John Bowes was a businessman and the son of an Earl who bought the Théâtre De Variétés in Paris. It was here that he met Josephine, an actress, they married in 1852.
They settled in France at Chateau de Barry but later sold their land and property in Louveciennes, buying plots of land in Barnard Castle to embark on an ambitious project to create a museum of fine art. It is one of the UK’s most striking and beautiful museums dedicated to art and design.
